Administrative

Administrative people are interested in work that offers security and a sense of being part of a larger process. They may be at their most productive under supervisors who give clear guidelines and while performing routine tasks in a methodical and reliable way.

They tend to enjoy clerical and most forms of office work, where they perform essential administrative duties. They often form the backbone of large and small organisations alike. They may enjoy being in charge of office filing systems, and using computers and other office equipment to keep things running smoothly. They usually like routine work hours and prefer comfortable indoor workplaces.

Further Education & PLC

What is Further Education & Training?

Further Education and Training or FET, offers a wide variety of life-long education options to anyone over 16. FET includes apprenticeships, traineeships, Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses, community and adult education as well as core literacy and numeracy services. FET courses and programmes are provided through the Education and Training Board network throughout the country as well as through other local providers including online through SOLAS’ eCollege. FET courses are provided at levels one to six on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). For more information on FET options see www.thisisfet.ie

Courses in Ed Zone 2 include the Leaving Certificate and many one-year PLC (Post Leaving Cert) and FET (Further Education and Training) courses.

Some PLC colleges also offer two-year programes (Advanced Certificates: Level 6) which may also fall into the Ed Zone 3 category.

PLC Courses

Further Education options are a wonderful part of Irelands’ educational landscape. PLC courses are one such option in the Further Education and Training Sector (FET). There are a huge variety of PLC courses which offer independent qualifications and can be very attractive to those who are not yet ready to commit to a four-year course.

These courses offer great progression links to higher education courses, apprenticeships and directly into employment. They provide opportunities for school leavers and learners of all ages to consolidate their learning in their area of specific interest. Most PLC courses are QQI accredited, or may be accredited by a internationally recognised UK body (e.g. City & Guilds, ITEC etc.)

Notes:

  • Most PLC courses lead to a QQI Level 5 Certificate and last one year.
  • Apply directly to the college for a place.
  • Entry requirements are usually a pass Leaving Certificate or QQI equivalent qualification and normally be subject to an interview. However, a Leaving Certificate is not always required.
  • Many courses allow progression into a second year in the same college for example; some PLC courses lead to a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate or equivalent, and last 2 years.
  • Most PLC courses can be used to enter Third Level courses using what is known as Progression RoutesNote: If the course that interests you offers or accepts progression pathways to level 6, 7 and 8 courses this green link   will appear beside the course information. The CareersPortal QQI Points Calculator will calculate how PLC results translate into leaving certificate points: click here

Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a programme of formal education and training. It combines learning in your place of work, with learning in an education or training centre. On successful completion of a number of phases of training, apprentices become recognised craftspeople or professionals.

Ireland has a long history of providing apprenticeships. Up until recently, most of these were focused in the Construction, Manufacturing and Motor industries, and include Carpenters, Bricklayers, and Motor mechanics. These are often referred to as the traditional Craft Apprenticeships.

Since 2016 the range of industries covered by apprenticeships has grown significantly. You now have a choice of taking apprenticeships from industries such as Computer & ICT, MedTech, Insurance, Finance, Accountancy, Logistics and Hospitality sectors. And the good news is that more apprenticeships are being developed all the time!

You can explore the various apprenticeships currently available using our CareerExplorer, where you can view details on all apprenticeships, and even check out those that are in development and expected to be available soon. Details such as the course content, training involved, and links to where the vacancies are advertised are all contained in each of the 50+ Apprenticeship profiles available. Leaving Certificate

Many adult learners decide to do the leaving certificate, particularly if they did not get an opportunity when they were younger and use it as pathway to returning to education.

If you want to do the Leaving Certificate, you should contact your local ETB (Education and Training Board) and ask for information.

Repeat Leaving Certificate

Education and Training Boards offer repeat Leaving Certificate courses in a number of colleges throughout the country. Some private colleges also offer repeat Leaving Certificate courses. Repeat classes tend to be small, which allows for individual attention. They also typically have a big focus on study skills.

Enrolment and advice on subject choices generally takes place from the beginning of August to mid September each year, depending on the college.

The cost of doing a repeat Leaving Certificate varies. ETB colleges are the less expensive option. Students are advised to check with their local ETB to see exactly what costs are involved. If you opt to repeat with a private college the cost is likely to be considerably higher.

Contact your local Adult Education Guidance Service (AEGI) based in the ETB if you are thinking of repeating your Leaving Certificate.
