This career involves working with people in a caring capacity. If you have no interest in helping people personally or educationally then this may be the wrong profession for you.

Empathy, patience and respect are important qualities for this job, in addition to be able to relate well to the person you are dealing with. As there is also a large amount of information to be handled in the job, good organisational, IT and time management skills are also quite important.

Social
The Social person's interests focus on some aspect of those people in their environment. In all cases the social person enjoys the personal contact of other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.

Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people, and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.

Introducing Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship is a programme of formal education and training. It combines learning in your place of work, with learning in an education or training centre. On successful completion of a number of phases of training, apprentices become recognised craftspeople or professionals.

An Action Plan to expand apprenticeship and traineeship in Ireland from 2016-2020 has been put in place. During the lifetime of this plan, the government hope to see 50,000 learners register on apprenticeship and traineeship programmes. 

The traditional craft apprenticeships include those in the Construction, Electrical, Engineering, and Motor sectors.

Over 20 new occupational apprenticeships are in the process of being developed and introduced in the Computer & ICT, MedTech, Insurance, Finance, Accountancy, Logistics and Hospitality sectors.

Traineeships

A Career Traineeship is a model of work-based learning at NFQ levels 4 and 5. Currently there are 31 traineeship programmes available around the country, with the opportunity to develop new programmes in response to identified skills needs.
