My advice would be that if you are not afraid of hard work that construction can be a very rewarding industry. It is a constantly changing industry which is interesting to work in.

To be a QS the main values would be to be interested in dealing with financial data and be happy to work as part of a team. Having an interest in construction generally outside of the commercials will also help as it keeps you interested in the projects you are working on apart from what they cost.

Realist?
Realist
Realists are usually interested in 'things' - such as buildings, mechanics, equipment, tools, electronics etc. Their primary focus is dealing with these - as in building, fixing, operating or designing them. Involvement in these areas leads to high manual skills, or a fine aptitude for practical design - as found in the various forms of engineering.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.

Introducing Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship is a programme of formal education and training. It combines learning in your place of work, with learning in an education or training centre. On successful completion of a number of phases of training, apprentices become recognised craftspeople or professionals.

The traditional craft apprenticeships include those in the Construction, Electrical, Engineering, and Motor sectors.

Over 20 new occupational apprenticeships are in the process of being developed and introduced in the Computer & ICT, MedTech, Insurance, Finance, Accountancy, Logistics and Hospitality sectors.

Traineeships

A Career Traineeship is a model of work-based learning at NFQ levels 4 and 5. New Career Traineeship initiatives commenced in 2015 for the Hospitality and Engineering sectors, in collaboration with local ETBs.
