Current Job?

Current Job Process Engineer, BD

Describe a typical day

Recently my typical day would revolve around first checking the production data from the previous shifts to see how the lines performed. Then I would meet with my team of technicians to discuss line performance and assign tasks such as emergency repairs, troubleshooting or preventative maintenance.

What particular skills do you bring to your workplace?

Constantly being organised and proactive has proved to be hugely significant to my career.

What’s cool?

My role has recently changed and I am now entirely focused on project work. Currently I am transferring a high speed automated assembly line into a plant. I am responsible for all aspects of the project; project planning, budget preparation, transportation of equipment, installation of plant services (power, air, vacuum, fume extraction) assembly of the line, de-bug, commissioning, process development studies, standard operating procedures, operator training, technician training and process validation.

What’s not so cool?

The main challenge is always to complete projects on time. Projects are always driven by cost so completion targets are usually very aggressive and rarely align with what would be the ideal plan if engineering was the only consideration. As project leader I am responsible for finding solutions to all problems that may come up even if they are not my area of expertise. This can require creative thinking and a lot of energy in order to get the resources or expertise required to complete the project on time.

How did you go ahead about getting your current job?

My father had a workshop for heavy equipment maintenance, he isn’t a professional engineer but he taught me a lot about workshop processes, engines, hydraulics, electrical etc. I would say I learned more ‘useful’ things about engineering from him than anyone else, this experience from a young age combined with my degree in engineering has really shaped my career.
