Guidance and Counselling

The Guidance Counsellor in St. Kevin’s College views the development of positive self-esteem as essential for students. The Guidance Counsellor works with all year groups and is involved in classroom activities, one to one guidance, career planning, assessment of educational and vocational abilities and other related supports.

The Guidance Department works with all senior students on an individual basis working on study plans, college applications and access programme applications. The Department also offers a drop-in guidance service for all of our students.

Guidance and counselling refers to the range of learning experiences provided in a developmental sequence, designed to assist students to make choices about their lives. These choices may be categorised into three distinct but interlinked areas:

  1. Personal and Social.
  2. Educational.
  3. Career.

Guidance activities delivered in St. Kevin’s College that assist students to make informed choices include:

Personal counselling.

  • Assessment using psychometric instruments and inventories
  • Career information (classroom, personal vocational guidance interviews, attendance at career event, guest speakers)
  • Use of information technology eg. www.careerdirections.ie and www.qualifax.ie
  • Personal and Social development programmes e.g SPHE

Counselling is a key part of the school guidance programme in St Kevin’s College, offered on an individual or group basis as part of a developmental learning process and at a moment of personal crisis. Counselling may include personal counselling, educational counselling, career counselling or a combination of these.
