GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING
The school guidance counselling service is administered by professionally trained School Guidance Counsellors. The SGC, as part of a school team, focuses primarily on the personal and social, educational and vocational development of his/her students. The aim of the service is to professionally answer the guidance and counselling needs of the student (the central figure in the learning process) in the context of the overall school mission statement.
‘Ní neart go cur le chéile’
‘In partnership, through a comprehensive curriculum, we aim to provide quality teaching and learning in the pursuit of excellence, to promote intellectual, spiritual and personal development in an atmosphere of respect thus enabling students to contribute positively to their community.’
Guidance and counselling is viewed in Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai as a process – not an event – which begins on the student’s entry in first year and continues right through the five or six years spent in the school.
Counselling Counselling empowers the students to make decisions, solve problems, change behaviours and resolve issues in their lives. Sometimes in Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai this may be personal counselling, educational counselling, career counselling or it may involve combinations of each. Counselling is a key part of the school guidance programme offered on an individual or group basis as part of a developmental learning process and at moments of personal crisis.
The Guidance Counsellors are members of the school educational team and as such work with various members of that team to provide students with the best possible support.
Members of this team include among others:
Subject Teachers and Departments
Special Needs Co-ordinator
Transition Year Co-ordinator
The Guidance & Counselling Service is a professional counselling service, which abides by a strict code of ethics and confidentiality policy as outlined by the Institute of Guidance Counsellors. A link to this code can be found here.
