Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.

We asked Claire Howlin from Forestry Careers Ireland to give some advice for people considering this job:

Go for it. There is nothing to lose. If you enjoy the outdoors, forestry will really suit you. On the other hand, if you would rather be in the office, there are many jobs within the sector like mine so it is a win-win situation. The forestry degree course is very broad so donít think of it as stand-alone forestry. The course could lead you in so many directions you wonít believe how many doors will open up for you. When selecting work placement, be clever about where you do it. Research the company. Why not ask them if you can continue to work with them through the summer increasing your chances of being hired. The forestry sector is very strong at present and is set to get even stronger so for me a course in Forestry is seriously worth thinking about.

Social?
Social
The Social person's interests focus on some aspect of those people in their environment. In all cases the social person enjoys the personal contact of other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.

Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people, and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.

Doing the Leaving Cert in 2018

Tools to help Leaving Cert Students

Doing the Leaving Cert in 2018?

Downloading the CareersPortal CAO Point Calculator App will be really helpful and it's absolutely free!

The latest app from CareersPortal.ie is an essential tool for all students of the Irish Leaving Cert.

Designed for both iPad, iPhone and Android, the Leaving Cert CAO Points Calculator does exactly that - it calculates your CAO points based on your subject results.

It’s quick and easy to use. You can input as many subjects as you want from Higher and Ordinary papers and the calculator will work out your top six scores, as used by the CAO.

The Leaving Cert CAO Points calculator is for students who are sitting the Leaving Cert in 2018 and beyond.

The calculator allows for the inclusion of LCVP grades and the 25 bonus points available to those who sit Higher Maths and achieve a H6 grade or greater.

We have not included Foundation level points as these may not be accepted by all colleges and the results may be misleading.

Download it now from iTunes Leaving Cert CAO Points Calculator.

Download it now for android  CAO Points Calculator Android .

A menu system included in the App provides a direct link to the CareersPortal CAO CourseFinder where you can search for the latest information on all current courses. The CourseFinder has loads of filters you can use to drill down and find the perfect courses.

Examples of some of the filters in the CourseFinder include;

  • New Courses for 2018
