Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton TD attends National Career Skills Awards 2017

Ireland's Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton TD, today attended the National Career Skills Competition 2017 Awards Ceremony, which took place in The Clock Tower at the Department of Education and Skills in Dublin City Centre.

The national competition is sponsored by McDonald’s Ireland and run by CareersPortal.ie.

Minister Bruton congratulated the winners of the 2017 National Careers Skills competition across all categories, and commended their development of career skills, commenting “It’s not just school to college anymore – we are seeing far more pathways opening up including new apprenticeships” “Work placements are the bridge between education & training, and employers.”

Additional Photos from the event are AVAILABLE here.

The National Career Skills Awards recognise students who complete a career investigation into an occupation of their choosing. Each student who took part in the competition was required to demonstrate their understanding of their chosen career, the educational pathways that lead to it, the most relevant Knowledge Requirements and the most important Career Skills needed to be successful in that area. The students were also required to explain which skills they have developed on their work experience and to indicate how their work experience has influenced their future career choices.

The competition, which is now in its 9th year, was developed to promote awareness around the whole area of Career Skills. Academic performance is important but it is careers skills that will set one job seeker apart from the next candidate, and which will be a greater indicator of future career success. Students need to understand this as early as possible so that they can work on researching and developing these skills.

The CareersPortal website is a fantastic support for student and career seekers alike who are researching the World of Work and the World of Education.

About the National Career Skill Competition

This is a national competition with entries coming from all over the country. Separate categories and prizes are awarded to students from the Leaving Cert Programme (LC), Leaving Cert Vocational Programme (LCVP), Leaving Certificate Applied Programme (LCA) and the Transition Year Programme. There is a special category for the best entries through the medium of Irish. The competition was expanded last year to include Adult Learners in Further Education who are undertaking a Work Experience module as part of the course work for their QQI Level 4 and Level 5 Awards.

Certificates of Participation are available for all entrants - Guidance Counsellors and Programme Co-ordinators can call 01-2090797 to request them.

Each of the students in the winning categories won an Apple MacBook Air, with great prizes also for those for those in second and third place. The winning schools in the 2nd level categories came away with €1,000 for their school programmes.

Presentations were made at a ceremony at the Department of Education and Skills.
