Want to be an English Language Assistant?

Applications now open for positions in France, Austria, Germany, Italy and Spain

Want to be an English Language Assistant?

Applications are now open for the English Language Assistant Scheme, which operates between Ireland and 5 other European countries. The Department of Education and Skills are recruiting English Language Assistants (ELA) to work in France, Austria, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The role of the ELA is to help the pupils to see the foreign language as a living language of millions of people rather than as a ‘school’ language.

The basic duties of the assistant are:-

  • To assist the regular staff of the school either in Austria, Germany, France, Italy or Spain
  • To conduct conversation classes in English
  • To supplement such classes by exercises in reading, dictation and oral composition
  • To give pupils an insight into the way of life in Ireland.
You can only apply for the ELA positions if you have completed one year at university, but you do not need to be a student of the language of the country you are applying for. You must be between 20-60 years old and be an Irish national, although there are some exceptions to this. To read the full application information click here and follow the link to the country in which you would like a placement.

The closing date for France is 31 January 2019. The closing date for AustriaGermany Italy and Spain, is 11 March 2019. Click on the individual links to learn more about each programme.

You may only apply for one post in one country, due to high demand.
