Almost 800 new SNAs for schools in Sept 2019

Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh TD has announced that there will be almost 800 new special needs assitant posts in schools across the country for the 2019/20 academic year. This marks a record level of investment for special needs assistants in education in Ireland. In addition to the almost 800 roles for September, there will likely be up to 130 additional special needs assistants recruited by December, after the support needs of schools have been established as the school year progresses.

The new roles in September and December will bring the number of SNAs in the Irish school system to 15,590, which marks a 51% increase since 2011, and will allow for the support of 37,500 pupils. These jobs will be created as a result of a governmental investment of almost €560 million in SNAs this year. At the announcement, Minister Joe McHugh reaffirmed the importance of SNAs, saying that "special needs assistants are vital to the work of a school" and commended them for "the fantastic work that they do." He said that these jobs "will ensure that every child who has additional care requirements and needs access to SNA support can receive this support."
