Naturalist

Not surprisingly, some aspect of the natural sciences will run through the Naturalists interests - from ecological awareness to nutrition and health. People with an interest in horticulture, land usage and farming (including fish) are Naturalists.

Some Naturalists focus on animals rather than plants, and may enjoy working with, training, caring for, or simply herding them. Other Naturalists will prefer working with the end result of nature's produce - the food produced from plants and animals. Naturalists like solving problems with solutions that show some sensitivity to the environmental impact of what they do. They like to see practical results, and prefer action to talking and discussing.

1,425 upgrades following Leaving Cert Appeals 2017

History, Maths and Biology among those that most likely resulted in an upgrade

A total of 1,425 Leaving Cert papers were given a higher grade, following student appeals. Higher Level English and Biology were the subjects with the highest number of appeals in 2017. History, Maths and Biology are among those subjects where an appeal most likely resulted in an upgrade.

The State Examination Commission (SEC) has today released details of the results of all appeals made following this year’s Leaving Certificate examination results.

Approximately 390,000 Leaving Cert grades were issued to 58,543 students in August this year. All students then had the opportunity to review their exam scripts in their schools at the beginning of September, following which, they had the option to appeal the result if they wished.

More than 14% of all appeals made to the SEC led to an upgrade for the student concerned. A total of 5,615 candidates made applications for appeals against 9,806 grades – leading to 1,425 upgrades, representing 0.36% of all grades awarded. Of those grades, 1,425 were upgraded. Just four were downgraded.

The overall average rate of upgrades in 2017 is down 3%, compared to 17.5% in 2016. According to the SEC, this may be due to the introduction of the new 10% grade bands this year, which replaced the 5% grade bands previously used. Candidates appealing this year required larger increases in marks in order to be awarded a higher grade.

The greatest number of appeals were seen in higher /Ard level English (1,688) and Biology (1,104). Higher Level Irish had 899 appeals. Higher Level Maths had 804 appeals and Foundation Level had just 13. French and Higher Level Business rank next, with 511 and 501 appeals respectively.

Upgrades

The highest number of upgrades were made in Higher Level Biology with 208 and Higher English with 198, followed by Higher Level Maths with 128 upgrades. Higher Level Irish had 95 upgrades, Geography and Higher Level French each had 83 and Higher History had 73.

The Leaving Cert appeals process

The appeals process involves the full re-marking of the paper, by a different examiner.

Students who are still unhappy with their re-marked scripts have a further chance to appeal by completing the application included with the notice of their revised result.

That application must be returned directly to the SEC by 5pm on Tuesday 17 October.

Re-viewing the re-marked script is also possible. Viewings will take place on Saturday 21 October between 10am and 4pm in the Athlone offices of the SEC.
