Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.

We asked Ejiro O'Hare Stratton from Health Service Executive to give some advice for people considering this job:

I would advise having a degree in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations. Professional training in nursing is necessary in order to understand patient care and what standards are required to provide quality care in an acute hospital setting.

One would also have to understand the value of planning, implementing and evaluating work practices in order to get the best out of employees. The person coming into the job would need to be patient, able to negotiate and work under pressure, as well as work on their own initiative.

Administrative?
Administrative
Administrative people are interested in work that offers security and a sense of being part of a larger process. They may be at their best operating under supervisors who give clear guidelines, and performing routine tasks in a methodical and reliable way.

They tend to enjoy clerical and most forms of office work, where they perform essential administrative duties. They often form the backbone of large and small organisations alike. They may enjoy being in charge of office filing systems, and using computers and other office equipment to keep things running smoothly. They usually like routine work hours and prefer comfortable indoor workplaces.

The Work header image

Window fitters install window frames and windows including double-glazing. They work with different materials including glass, wood, plastic and aluminium. Windows are generally standard size but occasionally can be made to measure.

If working on existing buildings, they first carefully remove the old glass and possibly the window frames using hand and power tools. They then put in place the new windows and adjust the frames to fit exactly, using hand tools such as planes and saws. Finally, they fix them into place and make any repairs that need to be done to the plasterwork around the window frame. Experienced fitters may repair and replace windows in historical buildings.

Some window fitters specialise in fitting conservatories or doors with glass panels. They may work alone, with one other person or in small teams. Window fitters are also often required to fit weather boarding.

Personal Qualitiesheader image

As a window fitter you will need good practical skills. You need to be physically fit as the work involves some heavy lifting and working at height from ladders. You must be able to take accurate measurements and make calculations.

Some of the work is outdoors so you should be prepared to work in all kinds of weather conditions. The ability to drive may be useful.
