Monthly salaries in the EU Institutions range from around 2,600 per month for a newly recruited AST/SC 1 official to around 16,000 per month for a top level AD 16 official with over four years of seniority.

Each grade is broken up into five seniority steps with corresponding salary increases. Basic salaries are adjusted annually in line with inflation and purchasing power in the EU countries.


As the name may suggest the basic monthly salary is just the starting point to remuneration associated with EU jobs as an employee may be entitled to allowances. All payments are subject to relevant tax and charges.

The duties of EU Financial Management/Accounting assistants include using specific IT tools (such as the integrated system of accounts) to help with:

  • The implementation of accounting and financial systems
  • Keeping financial and/or budget accounts
  • Designing, drawing up and implementing Financial Regulation procedures
  • Drawing up budget estimates and annual reports / accounts
  • Costing accounts and presenting financial statements
  • Planning and managing public procurement procedures
  • Carrying out financial and operational management of contracts or subsidies
  • Participating in cash management and/or imprest accounts and bank reconciliation
  • Monitoring financial and budget procedures
  • Supervising accounting methods and the financial management of revenue.

EU Financial Management /Accounting Assistants must have:

  • A good command of at least 2 European languages (one of which must be English, French or German)
  • either:
    - post-secondary education in finance or accounting and at least 3 years' professional experience in the field,
  • or:
    - secondary education and at least 6 years' professional experience in finance or accounting.

The requirements for contract staff may vary.

In general, to apply for an assistant competition, you must have completed (at least) secondary school.
