Ideally, try and get a job in the industry for a summer, or get a bit of experience before you go into it. You have to be happy with working outside, and doing physical work. If you are not prepared to work hard or are looking for a soft job, don't go into Landscaping. Design is very sexy at the moment, everyone wants to be a designer, a Landscape Designer. It's different on the ground, you have to be out there on sites in all weather and you have to make sure projects are managed well and you're able to muck in with everyone else. Biology is most important for anyone going into Horticulture or Landscaping as it covers propagation and helps with the identification of plant names, species and families through the universal use of Latin. Chemistry is also helpful as the use of various chemicals is a constant in horticulture. The chemical content and dangers of fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides in use in Amenity Horticulture needs to be understood anyone going into this business. Geography would be a relevant subject as well. Also, the simple things like having a full, clean driving licence, which can make you a lot more employable if you are trying for a job with a Landscape Conractor. This indicates that you are more mobile and can also drive a company van if needed. Be sure you're happy with the outdoor life. Having taken a Horticulture course will give you an advantage. However, it's possible to take a job first and study later, e.g. in IT Blanchardstown it is possible to study at night. I think you cannot beat doing the Diploma Course in the National Botanic Gardens because it is a good practical course which also covers all the theory and is invaluable for gaining plant knowledge.

The Work header image

Nail technicians offer a range of nail treatments to clients. They also apply art and fashion to nails, by painting them in different styles and making them look healthy or fashionable.

Nail technicians also apply, repair and remove artificial nails or enhancements.

The work of a nail technician is to  first find out what kind of treatment the client wants to have. This may include:

  • Trimming, shaping and polishing nails
  • Conditioning the skin around the nails using oils and creams
  • Applying nail enhancements
  • Doing repairs to enhancements
  • Applying nail art techniques
  • Giving hand, foot or arm massages to improve circulation
  • Strengthening nails
  • Giving treatments to help stop people biting their nails

Nail technicians also advise clients how to look after their nails and nail enhancements once they get home, and when they might need to have them checked or replaced again. They also repair any enhancements that might have been damaged, fill in any gaps in the surfaces of the nails and apply tips to the enhancements.

Duties include making sure that the equipment they use is kept clean and tidy and that they use the correct chemicals for the particular task.

Nail technicians might also help with reception duties, such as answering the telephone, making appointments and taking payments. They might also sell products to clients and have contact with nail product suppliers.

Nail technicians might work alone, or with other technicians, beauticians, hairdressers or therapists in a larger salon or depatment store environment.

Personal Qualitiesheader image

As a nail technician you will need:

  • An ability to get on well with people
  • Friendly and tactful manner
  • Patience
  • Good listening skills - you could spend up to two hours with one client
  • Good hand-eye co-ordination
  • Some artistic and creative ability
  • Good hand skills to do small and detailed work
  • Ability to keep up to date with changes in nail care techniques and products.

A smart appearance and understanding of the anatomy of nails, and the problems or diseases that can affect them is important inthis job role. Awareness of health, safety and hygiene, especially when dealing with different chemicals is also required.

For self-employed nail technicians, business and marketing skills are useful. Mobile nail technicians, who visit clients in their own homes will need a full driving licence.

Entry Routesheader image

Professional nail care is a growing business. Nails have become a major fashion 'must have' and Nail technicians are in demand.

Some people choose to specialise in nail technology after qualifying in Beauty Therapy. It's important to choose a course leading to a recognised qualification e.g. ITEC accredited training course.
