Creative people are drawn to careers and activities that enable them to take responsibility for the design, layout or sensory impact of something (visual, auditory etc). They may be drawn towards the traditional artistic pursuits such as painting, sculpture, singing, or music. Or they may show more interest in design, such as architecture, animation, or craft areas, such as pottery and ceramics.

Garden centre assistants work outside and in a retail shops. Similar posts can be found in retail nurseries.  
 
Work outside can include preparing ground ready for planting nursery stock, shrubs and trees. Weeding and cleaning the prepared beds, watering and pruning are all part of tending in the growing cycle. In the greenhouse, daily tasks can include pricking-out young plants, transferring them to larger pots, taking cuttings and grafting plants on to other plants of good root stock.  
 
In the retail shop area of a garden centre, assistants promote sales and advise customers on plant choice and how to look after plants. Other tasks include dealing with sales, stocking shelves, ordering new stock and helping with daily general tasks such as clearing up, watering, spraying and preparing stock for sale to the public. It can also involve handling money and recording purchases in an electronic cash register

You will need to be adaptable as the work of a garden centre assistant can be extremely varied. You also need to be physically fit as tasks can involve bending, digging, lifting and carrying.  
 
When working in the retail shop, you will be on your feet for most of the day. You will need a good knowledge of a wide range of plants and be able to use your knowledge in advising the public. Dealing with the public and promoting sales can be a major part of the job, so you need to be approachable and outgoing. You will also need patience when dealing with difficult customers.  
 
Accuracy with numbers is important when recording stock levels and dealing with sales.
