The Work - Building Services Engineering Technician
Building services engineering technicians help building services engineers in the design, installation and maintenance of services in buildings. These services include heating, air conditioning, plumbing, ventilation, lighting and power, communications and fire prevention.
Building services engineering technicians carry out surveys of existing buildings to find out their condition and to help recommend the services needed. They use draughting skills to design layouts such as service pipes in an office block, or to make minor changes to an existing heating system.
Most building services engineering technicians use computer-aided design (CAD) to carry out this work. (A chartered building services engineer usually does large-scale or complex designs.)
Building services engineering technicians may also estimate costs, check deliveries of materials on-site, examine installation work and write progress reports for building services engineers. They assess the feasibility and implications of existing plans. They also test systems and carry out routine inspections of equipment. You would also be required to keep up to date with EU directives.
Building services engineering technicians may need to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
