The Work - Business Systems Service Technician

A business systems service technician carries out delegated tasks in the business equipment service industry. As a technician work will involve maintaining and updating on-site business systems through the use of specific computer packages.

As a service technician you will apply your knowledge of business systems to fixing a range of data communication, printing and networking systems as well as analogue and digital electronics. 

Work as a business systems technician involves conducting inspections for quality control and assurance programs, reporting findings and recommendations.

Work tasks includes testing a range of systems and liaising with manufacturers. You must also communicate effectively with clients to understand the problems they are experiencing with their equipment and be able to fix any issues in a timely manner. 

As a technician, you could be on call to different businesses. Work is variedand may involve servicing large and small items of equipment.

An interest in computers and/or electronics is also desirable for this occupation. Being able to work to deadlines is an important attribute for this job.  

It is necessary to have an accurate and methodical approach to your work. Strong communication skills are vital in order to liaise with clients and work colleagues. Clients may not always be able to explain their problem clearly, so you will need to be patient, asking questions to help clarify the nature of the problem.

As this job may require you to travel to clients premises so you may need a driving license. A reasonable level of physical fitness/stamina is desirable, as you may have to carry heavy equipment to and from storerooms and to users' offices.

Entry Requirements - Business Systems Service Technician

This occupation can be entered via the traineeship route.

SOLAS (formerly FÁS) provide a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Business Systems Servicing.

The duration of the Business Systems Service Technician Traineeship is 33 weeks. The Traineeship consists of 25 weeks off-the-job training with FAS and 8 weeks on-the-job training with a host employer. [Click here for SOLAS information]

Several Computer and Network Technician level5/6 courses offered by further education institutes focus on areas such as computer systems and network maintenance.  

Employment opportunities can be found with many large IT companies who employ systems technicians and also with electronic repair companies.

Entering this occupation via the traineeship route provides you with an opportunity to progress to senior positions in the Business Systems Service sector through your experience and further training which you may undertake in areas such as computer networking or management. 

The employer pays the apprentice while s/he is being trained on-the-job. A training allowance is paid by the local ETB while the apprentice is attending the off-the-job training, and an Apprentice Rate of pay during the on-the-job phases of their apprenticeship. Generally, the rates of pay are based on a percentage of the fully qualified rate for the occupation:

  • 1st Years – 33.3%
  • 2nd Years – 50%
  • 3rd Years – 75%
  • 4th Years – 90%

Training Allowances

A training allowance is paid by the local ETB to apprentices while attending off-the-job training. In some cases, a contribution towards travel or accommodation costs may be paid if deemed eligible. The sector the apprentice's employer is engaged in will determine the allowance payable. These allowances are calculated on the gross wages paid by industry in each sector. The amount the apprentice gets will generally be less than that, as it is based on the net take-home pay of the relevant sector. Student Contribution

The Annual Student Contribution is charged to students attending Higher Education Institutions including Institutes of Technology (IoT). Apprentices now pay the same contribution as full time students, but their contribution is based on the time they spend in the Institute or College.

The Student Contribution is payable to the IoT /College on the date of registration for the training phase. You should consult the relevant IoT/College for details of payment options.
