The Work header image

Computer/software sales assistants help customers choose those products which would best meet their needs and perform all the tasks necessary to complete the sale.

Many customers will not have a detailed knowledge of computers, so the assistant may need to spend a while talking to them to find out their needs. Customers will expect in-depth information and informed advice. In many cases, the customer will also want the assistant to demonstrate the hardware or software concerned.

When a sale has been made, assistants take the payment and record the sale on an electronic cash register.

As well as their direct selling responsibilities, computer/software sales assistants are generally expected to perform a range of other duties. These may include setting up display machines and dealing with customer complaints and returned goods.

Many computer/software stores also have associated mail order and Internet operations. In such cases, assistants' responsibilities may also include taking telephone orders and enquiries, answering letters and emails, processing orders, and general post room duties.

Personal Qualitiesheader image

As a computer/software sales assistant, you will need an interest in computers and a good knowledge of the products on sale.

A willingness to learn and develop your knowledge is also important as the technology and computer industry is constantly changing and improving.

You will be the first (perhaps only) person potential customers meet, so you will need to be clean and tidy in appearance, and friendly and polite. Good communication skills are essential, both when listening to customers to try to understand their needs and when explaining sometimes complex technical matters to them. You will need to remain calm and courteous at all times.

You must enjoy working in a close-knit team and be prepared to be adaptable.

Finally, physical fitness/stamina is important, as computer/software sales assistants are on their feet for most of the day. They may also be required to carry heavy boxes containing computers and other equipment to and from the stockroom and to customers' cars.
