Social

The Social person's interests focus on interacting with the people in their environment. In all cases, the Social person enjoys the personal contact with other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.

Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.

The Work - Vehicle Parts Salesperson

Vehicle parts salespeople identify, obtain stock, supply and sell all types of vehicle parts and accessories. Their main role is to sell the goods. They will sell new or used parts depending on what's available. They advise customers on the parts and accessories they need.

Vehicle parts salespeople take orders from customers both over the telephone and in person, and advise them on the parts they require. They identify the part number using a microfiche or computer and select the parts from the warehouse or external supplier. Parts salespeople issue invoices for sales, handle cash or cheques and order stock. They keep records of all parts being sold and stored. One of their responsibilities is to keep the shop floor tidy and all parts in order where they can be easily accessed.

In small parts departments, they unload deliveries, check in parts and store parts in the warehouse. Parts departments supply parts to mechanics in the workshop who carry out service and repairs, to customers in the motor vehicle trade and to the general public. They usually specialise in either light vehicles such as cars or vans or heavy vehicles such as lorries and buses. More experienced parts salespeople may work only on telephone sales/orders.

This occupation is typically suited for people with the following Career Interests:

Enterprising

Enterprising people like situations that involve using resources for personal or corporate economic gain. Such people may have an opportunistic frame of mind, and are drawn to commerce, trade and making deals. Some pursue sales and marketing occupations. Many will eventually end up owning their own business, or in management roles in larger organisations. They tend to be very goal-oriented and work best when focused on a target. Some have an entrepreneurial inclination.

Administrative

Administrative people are interested in work that offers security and a sense of being part of a larger process. They may be at their most productive under supervisors who give clear guidelines and while performing routine tasks in a methodical and reliable way.

They tend to enjoy clerical and most forms of office work, where they perform essential administrative duties. They often form the backbone of large and small organisations alike. They may enjoy being in charge of office filing systems, and using computers and other office equipment to keep things running smoothly. They usually like routine work hours and prefer comfortable indoor workplaces.

Realists are usually interested in 'things' - such as buildings, mechanics, equipment, tools, electronics etc. Their primary focus is dealing with these - as in building, fixing, operating or designing them. Involvement in these areas leads to high manual skills, or a fine aptitude for practical design - as found in the various forms of engineering.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.

Qualities

The work requires good knowledge both of the products being sold and of the vehicles for which the parts are being supplied. A willingness to learn and develop your knowledge is also important as the technology and industry is constantly changing and you will need to keep up-to-date with latest developments.

As a parts salesperson, you will need to understand how to find and use information from catalogues. You will also have to use equipment such as computers and microfiche.

You must be able to use your initiative and work with little supervision. Numeracy is also required.

You should be able to communicate well with members of the public, and be pleasant and polite. Telephone orders require vehicle parts salespeople to take down instructions accurately.
