About Us

The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) is one of the largest in the country and is located on the western seaboard in the historic city of Galway. Spread across five campuses the Institute offers ordinary, honours and masters degree programmes in the disciplinary areas of business, engineering, science, hotel and catering, humanities and nursing. Graduates from the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology enjoy a national and international reputation for excellence, incorporating both a theoretical and applied orientation in their specialities.

Undergraduate at GMIT

GMIT offers a range of both ordinary and honours degree programmes in the areas of business, science, engineering, humanities, hotel and catering, and nursing. All of our undergraduate programmes are mapped on to Ireland’s National Framework of Qualifications, are internationally recognised, and have been designed to ensure that graduates from these programmes can demonstrate a theoretical and applied knowledge of their subject areas.

Postgraduate at GMIT

GMIT is strongly focused on the provision of postgraduate programmes and research opportunities. All of our postgraduate programmes have an applied focus and are directed at the needs of the employment market in Ireland and abroad, allowing students to complement their undergraduate degree or change career direction. We offer taught postgraduate diplomas and masters in the areas of accounting, business, computing, environmental systems and technology education.

Research at GMIT

GMIT has a strong reputation for research at Master, PhD and post doctoral level. Research programmes are available in business, engineering, humanities, science and tourism. GMIT has particular research strengths in the areas of Marine and Freshwater, Biomedical Engineering and Energy for the Built Environment.

Erasmus Programme at GMIT

GMIT has been one of the earlier participants of Erasmus since its creation in 1987. GMIT can offer the opportunity to its students to spend a study period abroad from 3-12 months in a higher education institution in an eligible European member state. Students who take part in the Erasmus programmes generally find it very beneficial, both academically and personally. They develop a fluency in a foreign language and are generally more attractive to prospective employers because of their experience travelling, living and perhaps working in a foreign country.

Erasmus also enhances co-operation between education and industry by facilitating placing students on work placements to meet part of their course requirements. Erasmus programmes also support teaching staff and provide them the opportunity to deliver at least 5 hours of teaching an another eligible European country. Currently GMIT has bilateral agreements with 50 European Colleges and accepts students from these colleges each year to participate on the Erasmus Student Exchange programmes.

Student Support Services at GMIT

Students entering programmes in GMIT will have a wide range of student services available to them. The Student Health Unit caters for the health needs of all students and provides emergency first aid and cover for the institute. Confidential counselling services are also available on all campuses. Other services available to students include a full-time careers service, pastoral care of students needs, and a parent/baby support group.

Students who are interested in being active have a wide range of sports and activities to choose from, including archery, basketball, cycling, Gaelic games, karate, kayaking, rugby, soccer and volleyball to name but a few. The institute's Student Union represents the interests of all students and also provides additional services such as photocopying, postal facilities and general information.
