Get some experience working with both children and the elderly and feel comfortable working with both. Throughout college you will take part in clinical placements where you will be required to work with various age groups.

Work hard in school and achieve good Leaving Cert. results in order to get the necessary points for entry into the course.

Research the career thoroughly and arrange to speak with a speech and language therapist to discuss the job further.

Think about the personal characteristics mentioned below that are important for the job and think about whether you possess these characteristics


Enterprising people like situations that involve using resources for personal or corporate economic gain. Such people may have an opportunistic frame of mind, and like commerce, trade and making deals. Some are drawn to sales and marketing occupations. Many will eventually end up owning their own business, or managing a section in larger organisations. They tend to be very goal-oriented, and work best when focused on a target. Some have an entrepreneurial inclination.

Special Mathematics Entrance Examination

The Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Limerick (UL) offer a special entrance mathematics examination to give Leaving Certificate students a second chance to pursue a course of study in science and engineering.

DATE OF EXAM: Thursday, August 24th, 2017.

The special mathematics examination is for students who achieve sufficient CAO entry points and satisfy all other entrance requirements, but who do not achieve the requisite grade in Mathematics (Ordinary or Honours) in the Leaving Certificate. The exam costs €40.

The examination is based on the Leaving Certificate Curriculum.

The exam will take place prior to second round CAO results at the University of Limerick.

The exam is 3 hours long, from 2.30pm to 5.30pm
