Posted on October 11, 2019

As Ballyfermot College of Further Education celebrates 40 years of excellence in education some of our students also have reason to celebrate, in particular our Music students in both the Rock School and the Trad. School aka Ceoltoir, our Graphic Design Students, Art Students, Media Students and the students from our BA in Media Production Management Students. They seem to be on a roll and we’re delighted for them.

MUSIC: The shortlist has recently been announced for the 2019 RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards, taking place in Vicar Street on October 24th and Ballyfermot College of Further Education ( Music Studentswere well-represented again on this year’s RTE Folk Awards shortlist. Rock School (HND in Music Performance) graduates Junior Brother (pictured below) and Lisa O’Neill were both nominated in various categories as well as Daoirí Farrell from the Ceoltóir (HND in Traditional Music) course. Congratulations to them from all in BCFE and we wish them the best of luck in Vicar Street on the 24th of the month.

Junior Brother

Former BCFE Rock School student Ronan Kealy aka. Junior Brother (pictured above) has taken the Irish music industry by storm this summer (see the full video below). According to Blindboy of the Rubberbandits “he’s making some of the best songs in Ireland at the moment” and actor Cillian Murphy is a big fan.

GRAPHIC DESIGN: Our Graphic design students have also had their reasons to celebrate; Everyone at Ballyfermot CFE ( would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to Susan Sweeney (pictured right below) who won FutureIllustrator 2019 and Dominic Barnes (pictured left below) who picked up third prize at OFFSET this year.

Future Illustrator 2019 is a partnership between OFFSET, The Irish Examiner and Chemistry to give budding illustrators a chance to get their work seen at OFFSET and published in a national newspaper. Entrants had to develop an illustration which could be used as part of an editorial feature in the Irish Examiner. The feature was about Brexit.

Both Susan and Dominic were first year students on the Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design at BCFE at the time and have progressed to second year to complete their Higher National Diploma. They were presented with their prizes on stage in front of two and half thousand design delegates from all around the world. Their winning images (featured above) were then featured in a full page article in the Irish Examiner (Susan’s work was also featured in the Donegal Democrat).

All the entries to this prestigious competition can be viewed on the Chemistry Website.

Ballyfermot CFE Graphics Students do it again to scoop nominations andhit the International Stage at the YCN AWARDS 2019, London.

Joanne Hogan, BCFE Design Tutor at YCN Awards

BCFE ( students of the Graphic Design HND Course have won nominations and awards at the recent YCN (You Can Now) International Student Design Awards 2019 (Joanne Hogan, Graphic Design Tutor is pictured above).

BCFE students Chiara Tallarini and Helen O’Higgins received a Commendation Award for their work on the Childline Brief while Stella Sparks, Beta Franca Maria Therese Salavador were shortlisted for their submission on the Peabody Brief. These projects were run by Joanne Hogan, Design Tutor, in conjunction with a Core collaborative Project module which forms part of the second year of the Design HND Programme.

Since 2001 the YCN in London have organised an annual student design competition to showcase emerging creative talent. Students from Universities, College and Art & Design schools across the UK, Europe, USA and Canada complete for these awards by responding to a collection of live creative briefs; written each year by partnering with brands, charities and other organisations.

The 2019 YCN Awards event was hosted in the creative surroundings of Toynbee Hall. Winning students got an opportunity to take to the stage to collect the commendations presented to them by a collection of inspiring guests including Astrid Stavro; Design Partner of PENTAGRAM, emerging illustrator Joey Yu and Chris Whelan, Co-founder of Scriberia.

The Awards enable all those who take part to benefit from engaging with thoroughly contemporary communications challenges, and gives increased confidence, visibility and employability to all those that excel within them.

Niamh O’Reilly (first left above), who has just completed the two-year HND in Journalism at BCFE in May, has started a paid internship at Newstalk. Supported by the BAI (Broadcasting Authority of Ireland) and Learning Waves, it offers journalism graduates from third level institutions an opportunity to become an integral part of a busy radio newsroom.

Over a five-month period, the graduates will work with an assigned station mentor to complete a series of tasks and to produce content for their radio station’s audience. Niamh is one of five journalism graduates to be selected for the much-coveted programme (the only one from an FE college – the other four were from universities across Ireland).
