Posted on December 13, 2017

More than 120 talented young students will today be awarded sports and academic scholarships by Institute of Technology Carlow.

Irish athletes Marcus Lawler, Molly Scott and John Fitzsimons, Republic of Ireland women’s soccer internationals Amanda McQuillan and Roma McLaughlin, Waterford senior hurler Colin Dunford, Kildare senior footballer Kevin Feeley, Cork senior footballer Michael Hurley, and US basketball stars James Gordon and Maeve Parahus - all of whom are students at Institute of Technology Carlow – are being recognised as elite sports scholars for their huge contribution to sport. They are amongst 90 students in total who will today be awarded gold and elite sports scholarships for the 2017/2018 academic year at a special ceremony, as a result of their exceptional sporting ability.

Now in its 19th year, the Institute’s sports scholarship programme offers a support package and/or bursaries to students of exceptional sporting ability. Sports scholars receive financial and academic support, mentoring, injury rehabilitation, strength and conditioning support, high performance coaching and access to Institute of Technology Carlow’s renowned sports facilities.  The number of scholarships offered to students has more than doubled since the programme was introduced in 1999, reflecting Institute of Technology Carlow’s renown as one of the leading third-level sporting institutions in Ireland with a growing academic portfolio of sports programmes.  The programme’s elite scholarship strand recognises the Institute’s very best athletes competing at the highest level in their chosen sport.

The current sports scholarship programme coincides with the development of a new 30-acre multi-million Sports South Campus at the Institute.

Congratulating the sports scholars on all their achievements, Institute of Technology Carlow president, Dr. Patricia Mulcahy said, “My congratulations to all recipients of our sports scholarships.  Yesterday, our Institute launched its new Graduate Attributes initiatives.  These attributes empower our students to define and develop that which sets them apart. They build from all aspects of student life, including involvement in sport, clubs and societies.  You possess in abundance the abilities that underpin our Graduate Attributes. Your talent, application, dedication and persistence, along with self-evident leadership abilities, will stand to you, not just in your chosen sporting field, but also in your careers and lives outside of sport”.

“Your sporting successes continue to enhance the profile of our Institute. They reinforce our determination to continue to provide and further develop world-class sporting facilities.  The next significant multimillion investment will see us breaking ground on our new 30-acre South Sports Campus in Spring of 2018”, commented Dr. Mulcahy.

At a separate ceremony at Institute of Technology Carlow’s new Haughton Building, 32 students will be awarded academic scholarships. Now in its 14th year, the Institute’s academic scholarship initiative awards one academic scholarship per course to the student who achieves the highest points in the Leaving Certificate. Academic scholars from nine counties will be joined by their parents and a school representative for the occasion.

Congratulating the academic scholars, Institute of Technology Carlow President, Dr. Patricia Mulcahy said, “My warmest congratulations to all our new academic scholarship recipients. You have been blessed with talent, opportunity and education. Continue to make the most of what you have been given.  During your time here, dedicate all your efforts towards becoming strong independent learners, capable of determining your own intellectual pathway over your entire lives, while making a contribution that you can be proud of”.
