Creative

Creative people are drawn to careers and activities that enable them to take responsibility for the design, layout or sensory impact of something (visual, auditory etc). They may be drawn towards the traditional artistic pursuits such as painting, sculpture, singing, or music. Or they may show more interest in design, such as architecture, animation, or craft areas, such as pottery and ceramics.

Creative people use their personal understanding of people and the world they live in to guide their work. Creative people like to work in unstructured workplaces, enjoy taking risks and prefer a minimum of routine.

IDEA – A summer innovation academy for secondary students

Posted on June 6, 2018

Dublin School of Creative Arts at DIT has launched IDEA, a summer innovation, design and entrepreneurship academy for senior cycle secondary school students.

Over the course of the week, students will be challenged to come up with business, product and social innovation concepts based around new and emerging technologies such as 3D printing.

The week will start with studio based creative workshops which will challenge students to develop ideas and equip them with the tools to solve real-world design problems.

Teams will then progress to prototyping their idea, and classes will include 3D modeling, 3D printing and Laser Cutting etc. Communications workshops will introduce the students to film editing software and each team will create a short film, made on smart phones, that explains their product. Business workshops will focus on entrepreneurship and teams will be helped to develop an elevator pitch based upon their product’s unique selling points.

The week will culminate in an exhibition of prototypes, screening of films and elevator pitches to DIT Hothouse, a representative from Intel as well as other panel members and the public.

The course will be delivered by DIT lecturing staff and throughout the week teams will be supported by DIT design students who will help them develop their innovations.

IDEA aims to inspire the next generation of designers, innovators, change-makers and entrepreneurs.

The programme is supported by Intel Ireland and the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and is a collaboration between several schools and bodies within DIT including the Dublin School of Creative Arts, School of Mechanical and Design Engineering, School of Retail & Services Management, DIT Hothouse (our Knowledge Transfer and Incubation Centre), and the DIT Access and Civic Engagement office.

IDEA will take place at DIT Grangegorman from June 25th - 29th, 2018 and is aimed at Senior Cycle Secondary School Students (Transition, 5th or 6th Year).
