Realist

Realists are usually interested in 'things' - such as buildings, mechanics, equipment, tools, electronics etc. Their primary focus is dealing with these - as in building, fixing, operating or designing them. Involvement in these areas leads to high manual skills, or a fine aptitude for practical design - as found in the various forms of engineering.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.

PLCs & Colleges of Further Education as ‘Successful Pathways’ to HEIs & Apprenticeships

Posted on September 6, 2019

It has long been recognised within the Guidance Community and HEI’s that PLC’s and Colleges of Further Education can be beneficial stepping stones and good preparation venues for students moving to HEI’s, Apprenticeships and Employment.

Plunket College F.E. have tracked student groups continuum over the last ten years to evaluate progressions. The outcome has helped to inform us of student advancements and developments. This research also helps the college to establish programmes that benefit the student’s attainment and progression while in higher education, apprenticeship or employment.

Our Counselling & Psychology class has doubled over the years and last year had a 75% progression to Third level including UCD, Maynooth University, NCAD and TUD. This course also qualifies and prepares students for working in Community & Health areas and 20% of the cohort secured employment.

The Pre University (Third Level Access) class has again been our most successful course in terms of progression to HEI’s. 75% of the class secured places at Third Level including DCU, UCD, Maynooth University, TCD, IADT & WIT.  Our U/23 class has doubled this year and we are looking forward to watching this group develop.

In our Motor Vehicle Maintenance Pre Apprenticeship course 66% of last year’s students secured an Apprenticeship and 34% secured employment. We have refurbished the MVM department and installed a new EAE 4000kg scissor lift and a Fini Pulsar silenced compressor.

Our Repeat Leaving Cert Programme again achieved student entry to Veterinary Science and Medicine/Science and our highest score increase was 138 points.
