Minister Launches New Yeats Academy at IT Sligo
Minister of State for Higher Education Mary Mitchell O’ Connor officially launched the new Yeats Academy of Art, Design and Architecture (YAADA) at IT Sligo on the 5th of June.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister said “We think of Joyce’s Dublin, Kavanagh’s Monaghan, Heaney’s Derry and Yeats’s Sligo. So I’m really pleased to formally launch the Yeats Academy of Arts, Design and Architecture. May it be wonderful and may it be a successful catalyst for imagination and creativity.”
YAADA offers six distinctive programmes across the disciplines of art, design and architecture and aims to build on its reputation in music and theatre, literature, design, architecture and art, enabling more students to nurture and grow in the northwest. IT Sligo has been delivering courses in the arts since 1972 and has several award winning lecturers across all disciplines.
It is also one of the only institutions in the west to offer a degree in Architecture recognised by both the RIAI and the RIBA. The allocation of €13.7 million in capital investment towards the development of a modern centre for the new Yeats Academy will ensure its establishment as a creative hub in the northwest, providing a centre for excellence in the development of arts, design and architecture both in the region and further afield.
