If you are considering full-time scientific research, try to get a work placement in a university department so you can see first hand what it’s like. It’s a relatively relaxed, flexible environment, but there is a certain degree of self-motivation needed. 

So I would say you need to be able to push  yourself and be proactive in terms of setting up collaborations with other scientists etc.

The Investigative person will usually find a particular area of science to be of interest. They are inclined toward intellectual and analytical activities and enjoy observation and theory. They may prefer thought to action, and enjoy the challenge of solving problems with clever technology. They will often follow the latest developments in their chosen field, and prefer mentally stimulating environments.

Electronic Engineering develops the way electricity is used to control equipment. Electronic engineers continually improve the quality of our lives through the development of new equipment in the fields of medicine, communications, computing, security, business and entertainment. It is a challenging and creative profession and one which has brought us MP3 players, digital cameras, security systems, improved weather forecasting, electronic medical devices and so many other things we now take for granted.

This three-year programme combines theory and practical skills with 50% of class time spent on practical exercises in laboratories, workshops and the computing centre. Modules over the programmes three years include: electricity; electronics; engineering science; electronic craft practice; technical communication; measurement and test; analogue and digital electronic systems; system design and fabrication; programmable electronics amongst others. Students are set an extensive development project in Year 3 that requires use of acquired practical skills.
