Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Paul Galvan from Department of Education and Skills to give some advice for people considering this job:
|I would advise them to ensure they enjoy working with young people. If possible try to get some teaching experience; I started out as a substitute teacher before applying for my H Dip in Education.|

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the HETAC or Higher Education Institutes.
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.
Mechanical Engineering is a central element of almost all industries. It encompasses the design, construction and maintenance of machines and the generation and utilisation of power. The scope for mechanical engineering covers an increasingly diverse range of industries including: aerospace, textiles, medical, transport, power generation, computers and electronics. Even where an end product is not mechanical in nature the processes and plant that manufactures it almost certainly are. The programme provides a deeper exposure to Mechanical Engineering topics including: industrial power systems using compressed air and hydraulics, machine design using computer systems, industrial electronics control systems, characteristics and applications of engineering materials. Practical content includes hands-on experience in PLC systems and in pneumatic and hydraulic control systems, and computer aided design laboratories.

Mechanical Engineering technicians find work in a wide range of different jobs. For example, you may work:
- as a project technician involved with the design, installation and testing of new pieces of equipment,
- as a maintenance engineer, supervising a group of maintenance people, to ensure production machinery runs smoothly with minimum breakdowns.
- in technical sales, presenting technical aspects of specialist engineering equipment to clients.
- as a field service technician, installing and maintaining industrial automation equipment.
