Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Afra Ronayne from ESB to give some advice for people considering this job:
|I would advise somebody considering this job to talk to people who are engineers already. They should try to talk to people working in different areas of engineering as even when people do the same degree they can have very different day to day jobs, from full time office based jobs to full time site based jobs.
Also it is important to remember that even if you complete an engineering degree you are not limited to a purely technical career as there are plenty of other areas you can get involved in like project management or finance.

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the HETAC or Higher Education Institutes.
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.
The main aim of the course is to develop a graduate with the knowledge and skills to competently work in the various sectors of the industry i.e. meat, dairy, grain, bread, sugar and drinks. The course will equip graduates with expertise in food safety management, modern food processing methods, regulatory affairs, epidemiology and food business. Professional development of the person is a key feature of the course. A twelve week industrial placement in the food industry organised in the third year of the course.

Recent studies have highlighted the need for a proper interface between third level colleges and the food industry that would enhance graduate employment prospects. It is envisaged that graduates would enter such areas as production processing quality assurance food analysis product development as supervisor / manager
