Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Kevin Keary from EU Careers to give some advice for people considering this job:
|Be proactive and look for the areas that interest you whether it’s the Environment or Human Rights and find MEP’s or interest groups that specialise in those interests and take the initiative to send them your CV.
Having a European language would help you considerably in this career. Irish should also not be ruled out as an option as this is considered as a second language.

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).
Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.
Undergraduate awards are awarded by the HETAC or Higher Education Institutes.
3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, sales managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, environmental engineers, criminal investigators, and financial analysts.
|#||Test / Interview / Portfolio / Audition|
This full-time three year Honours Degree course offers a degree to students who are interested in gaining employment in youth and community and related areas. A number of work placements are a key component of the course and this on-the-job training will build your knowledge and understanding of both the principles and practices of youth and community work. Note: This is not a restricted entry course for CAO, but there is an interview as part of the admission requirement.

Career options include mainstream youth work, projects; community development; youth and community centres, working with traveller groups; working with voluntary organisations; working with voluntary housing associations; hostels for homeless young people and adults; projects based on youth arts, youth offending, drug and alcohol misuse, care leavers and health education, community arts organisations; working with public sector organisations such as the Education and Welfare Service and the Community Work branches of the Health Service Executive. This course is now professionally recognised by NSETS, the North South body for youth work. This recognition will enhance the employment potential of graduates of the course.
