Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.
We asked Paul Meany from Department of Education and Skills to give some advice for people considering this job:
Need to have a belief about the value of the sort of education provided by the school to which you are applying.
Need to be able to cope with ambivalence - being leader in the school is not a black and white thing.
Need to believe in people, whether it is staff or students.

Certificates at this level are typically awarded for two years of full-time study after the leaving certificate or equivalent. Skills developed are mostly technical and vocationally specific, i.e. are focused on a specific career sector. National apprenticeships programmes are included in thhis level.
Awards at this level recognised by the National Framework of Qualifications may lead to 3rd level progression opportunities.
Qualifications at this level prepare for occupations that involve using the skills and knowledge learned alongside existing workers in 'real world' environments. Examples include restaurant managers, electricians, engineering technicians, legal secretaries, hairdressers, and web developers.
This is a workshop/lab based programme with hands-on experience on CNC machines, CAM software and metrology equipment. Students will learn the theory, maths and science aspects of engineering to support their practical work. Students will work as individuals and in groups on a variety of industrial standard engineering projects.
This programme can be completed in two years full time. First year of the programme is offered on a full time basis but second year may be taken either full time or part-time by taking two years to complete one academic year while working part-time.
