This is a job that you must be really interested in to succeed in. At times the hours can be very long and the work can be very challenging. You must be prepared to put up with the hard work in order to get the real experience and career progress that the job can offer you. If you are not really interested in this work you will be letting yourself and your colleagues down.

Social?
Social 
The Social person's interests focus on some aspect of those people in their environment. In all cases the social person enjoys the personal contact of other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.

Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people, and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.

Undergraduate awards typically reflect three to five years of study after secondary school and include Ordinary (Level 7) and Honours Bachelor Degrees and Higher Diplomas (Level 8's).

Undergraduate awards may be achieved directly or through a series of progression steps. Learners may choose to progress upwards from a Level 5 to a Level 6, Level 7 and finally a Level 8.

Undergraduate awards are awarded by the HETAC or Higher Education Institutes.

3rd level Graduates are qualified for a wide range of occupations, and their education prepares them for roles involving specific skills, and for coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. In this course you will gain the skills required to handle the complex, challenging and ever-changing primary education environment. 

The course will enable you to develop your subject knowledge of the Primary School Curriculum, deepen your understandings of how children learn and how schools work, and also provide an opportunity to develop your classroom management skills. You will be prepared to teach in the full range of primary schools including Gaelscoileanna, Educate Together and Community National Schools.

This course is still being run on the St. Patricks Campus, but you register as a DCU student.

Teaching is a highly skilled and challenging activity – it requires expert knowledge, but also the ability to apply that knowledge flexibly and to adapt it quickly to new situations. Teachers must be able to handle unexpected events in the classroom and to use these imaginatively to promote learning.

We will give you the opportunities you need to develop

  • your subject knowledge,
  • your understandings of how children learn
  • how schools work
  • your classroom management skills.

Our BEd is designed to help you become a skilled and creative teacher. All students study Education modules, do 30 weeks School Placement and visit the Gaeltacht for four weeks. You will also study specialisms relevant to teaching. You’ll be part of a small study group (a tutorial group) and this will give you a chance to share your experiences of school placement and your thoughts on course content.

You will cover the basics needed for teaching in Years 1 and 2. In Year 3, you will review what you have learned to date and will apply it in different situations. Year 4 focuses on deepening your expertise and developing your research skills.

Students spend time in schools in each year, with extended full-semester placements in each of Years 3 and 4. You will start by observing the class teacher and will build up gradually to teaching all day. Throughout your placements, you will be supported by both faculty and school staff.

In Year One students take three Foundations in Humanities and Science modules from English, French, Gaeilge, Geography, History, Mathematics, Music, Religious Studies and Science. You can continue with one of these as a Major Specialism in Years Two to Four, or may decide to opt for Early Childhood Education, Human Development, Physical Education or Special and Inclusive Education.

BEd students can take an additional optional qualification, Certificate in Religious Studies, and modules in Primary Religious Education in each of Years Two, Three and Four.
