If you are considering full-time scientific research, try to get a work placement in a university department so you can see first hand what it’s like. It’s a relatively relaxed, flexible environment, but there is a certain degree of self-motivation needed. 

So I would say you need to be able to push  yourself and be proactive in terms of setting up collaborations with other scientists etc.

Investigative 
The Investigative person will usually find a particular area of science to be of interest. They are inclined toward intellectual and analytical activities and enjoy observation and theory. They may prefer thought to action, and enjoy the challenge of solving problems with clever technology. They will often follow the latest developments in their chosen field, and prefer mentally stimulating environments.

Course Description

This Level 6 course is designed to give students the opportunity to explore the large variety of businesses and organisations involved in Animal Management. Students can develop skills valuable for industry or work towards managing a business of their own.

Practical and supervisory skills are enhanced through the course with students taking on more responsibility in the department and carrying out an independent practical study in an area of their choice. Work experience is also carried out in a relevant industry.
