Careers rarely develop the way we plan them. Our career path often takes many twists and turns, with particular events, choices and people influencing our direction.

We asked Ejiro O'Hare Stratton from Health Service Executive to give some advice for people considering this job:

I would advise having a degree in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations. Professional training in nursing is necessary in order to understand patient care and what standards are required to provide quality care in an acute hospital setting.

One would also have to understand the value of planning, implementing and evaluating work practices in order to get the best out of employees. The person coming into the job would need to be patient, able to negotiate and work under pressure, as well as work on their own initiative.

Enterprising?
Enterprising
Enterprising people like situations that involve using resources for personal or corporate economic gain. Such people may have an opportunistic frame of mind, and like commerce, trade and making deals. Some are drawn to sales and marketing occupations. Many will eventually end up owning their own business, or managing a section in larger organisations. They tend to be very goal-oriented, and work best when focused on a target. Some have an entrepreneurial inclination.

Course Description

This course is a one year, full-time course designed to prepare students for work in the modern office. Emphasis is placed on the use of the most modern technology and software.

The first 4 weeks of the course are almost entirely devoted to keyboarding, thus ensuring fluency in all computer modules. We like to encourage participation from mature students and offer a flexible time table to coincide with Primary School hours. If students cannot attend a full-time course, it is possible to complete the required number of modules over the year, with attendance hours agreed, in consultation, between the students and their teachers at the beginning of the year.
