What are your interests?



The Social person's interests focus on interacting with the people in their environment. In all cases, the Social person enjoys the personal contact with other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.

Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.

Second Chance Maths Exams

If a poor Leaving Cert Maths result has made a significant impact on your chances of getting a specific course, all hope is not lost.

Some colleges host Alternative Maths exams. Students who failed to guarantee themselves a place on a particular course due to their Leaving Cert Maths result may have a second opportunity to sit an alternative exam.

Colleges are also facilitating Preparation Courses in order to assist students that have difficulty with Maths.

DIT  holds a Mathematics Competency Test (MCT) for applicants to its Level 8 (Honours) Degree Programmes which require Higher Level Maths.  The purpose of the MCT is to offer candidates an alternative route to achieve this minimum entry requirement. They also offer a two day tutorial prior to this August exam. 

Cork Institute of Technology also holds a Mathematics examination for applicants who have expressed an interest in any of its programmes that require certain minimum levels of performance in Mathematics. The purpose of this examination is to provide such applicants with a “second chance” opportunity to achieve these minimum Mathematics entry requirements.

Maynooth University offers an Engineering Mathematics Exam to provide students with a second chance to secure the required H4 to gain entry into the Engineering degree.

NUI Galway holds an Engineering Maths Qualifying Examination for admission into the College of Engineering and Informatics. It is for students who satisfy the general requirements for matriculation in the college but who have NOT attained the requ
ired H4 for BE Programmes, H7/O3 for BSc Project & Construction Management, H6/O2 for BSc Computer Science & IT.

University of Limerick provide a Special Mathematics Entrance Exam to give Leaving Certificate students a second chance to pursue a course in science and engineering. Candidates will only be considered if they have achieved all other entry requirements. 

IT Tralee hold a Second Chance Maths Exam for applicants who have expressed an interest in any of its programmes that require a certain minimum grade in Maths. It is only relevant for applicants who have applied through CAO for IT Tralee.

Waterford Institute of Technology provide a Maths Entry Exam option for any student who did not achieve the required grade in Maths. This applies to any of the programmes of study at WIT, on the condition that students have met all other entry criteria. 

IT Carlow offer a Special Entrance Examination in Mathematics for the Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering. In advance of the examination, the institute will hold an intensive prepatory course over two days in August. 

‘Enabling Maths @ LYIT’ – available to students that fail their Leaving Certificate Maths paper ‘Enabling Maths @LYIT’ is a joint initiative between Donegal Education and Training Board and Letterkenny Institute of Technology. The programme supports students that fail the Leaving Certificate Maths exam and is designed to provide a third level pathway for learners that face this situation. In 2017/18, 22 students successfully completed this two week course at LYIT and subsequently progressed onto a third level programme at the institute. IT Sligo offers a free online pre-degree Mathematics Open Course MOOC leading to a special Mathematics exam, equivalent to Leaving Certificate Higher Level. The MOOC provides online resources including revision notes and sample papers to support students taking the examination in August.

The MOOC is particularly suitable for CAO Leaving Certificate applicants who may not meet the Mathematics entry requirements for BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering Honours degree programme following the Leaving Certificate examinations or who are not taking higher level Leaving Certificate Mathematics.
