Naturalist

Not surprisingly, some aspect of the natural sciences will run through the Naturalist's interests - from ecological awareness to nutrition and health. People with an interest in horticulture, land usage and farming (including fish) are Naturalists.

Some Naturalists focus on animals rather than plants, and may enjoy working with, training, caring for, or simply herding them. Other Naturalists will prefer working with the end result of nature's produce - the food produced from plants and animals. Naturalists like solving problems with solutions that show some sensitivity to the environmental impact of what they do. They like to see practical results and prefer action to talking and discussing.

Career Guidance at school

All students in Ireland are entitled to career guidance at school. This is normally delivered by a Guidance Counsellor and other teachers with expertise in the area. They are there to help you to make sense of the world of work and assist you with any decisions you have to take that will affect your career prospects.

Some of the decisions you have to make while at school include:

  • What subjects you choose, and whether they are at Higher (Honours) level or Ordinary (Pass) level.
  • What combinations of subjects are best for certain courses or jobs
  • How to prepare a CV and apply for jobs
  • How to choose and apply for college courses during your last year in school
  • How to apply for courses in England or Europe

Guidance Counsellors are often very busy, and may not always have enough time to give each student the attention they would like. It is really important that you make an appointment with your Guidance Counsellor if you need information that may affect your career. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience that may be very helpful in guiding your choices.

Making an Appointment

When making an appointment with a Guidance Counsellor about career matters, it is often useful to have done some research beforehand. Guidance Counsellors know a lot about what opportunities are available, but need to get to know you well to be able to help you with your decisions. The more you tell them about yourself and your circumstances, the greater the chance they will be able to help you.

Hint: Languages Connect
What I really like about my job is that it's very social. I did not expect that coming into an office environment. There's a very friendly atmosphere in here, which makes any stressful day a lot easier. We also do a lot of events and meet ups outside of work too, which is great for team building. Another thing I must include is the free tea, coffee and on-site lunches. It saves so much time in the mornings!
