They may prefer thought to action, and enjoy the challenge of solving problems with sophiscticated technology. These types prefer mentally stimulating environments and often pay close attention to developments in their chosen field.

Junior Cycle - Social, Personal & Health Education [SC]

Subject Group: Social
These subjects explore common issues faced by all people living in society. They develop the skills and knowledge used to manage personal resources and guide human behaviour.

Brief Description:
Early adolescence is a time of significant change for young people, physically, emotionally and socially.  

This new short course in Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE) will to help you to develop a positive sense of yourself and a commitment to caring for yourself and others.

You will have the dedicated space and time to develop the understanding and skills to learn about yourself, to care for yourself and others and to make informed decisions about your health and wellbeing in this rapidly changing world.

How will Social, Personal & Health Education [SC] be useful to me?
The syllabus has four strands:

Strand 1, Who Am I?, which focuses on developing self-awareness and building self-esteem.

Strand 2, Minding Myself and Others, which will provide you with the opportunity to reflect on how to best take care of yourself and others. 

Strand 3, Team Up, which focuses on learning about important relationships and building relationship skills.

Strand 4, My Mental Health, which focuses on bulding positive mental health, examining young people's experience of mental health and learning how you can support yourself and others in challenging times.  

This course will help you to develop a positive sense of yourself and your physical, social, emotional and spiritual health and wellbeing.

It aims to build your capacity to develop and maintain healthy relationships. Personal reflection, resilience and empathy are also promoted through SPHE.

Relationships and sexuality education (RSE) is important at this stage of your life. You will learn about important physical, social, emotional and moral issues around relationships, sexual health, sexuality and gender identity, including where to get reliable information from trusted sources.

You will learn to make informed decisions about your health and wellbeing, decisions that are further supported and encouraged by school, community and national policies and guidelines.

SPHE provides learning opportunities designed to enhance each of the six indicators - Active, Responsible, Connected, Resilient, Respected and Aware - that have been identified as central to students’ wellbeing, contributing to the school Wellbeing Programme in junior cycle.
