Guide to Leaving Cert Subjects

Subject Choice for LC

Towards the end of Third Year (or Transition Year if you are taking it), students will be asked to choose which subjects they would like to study for their Leaving Cert.

First you must consider which Leaving Cert programme you will take. This will depend largely on what is offered in your school. Explore The Three Leaving Certs here.

There are usually more subject options available for Leaving Cert than Junior Cycle, which means you can focus your studies more on the areas you are interested in.

Your choice of subjects in the Leaving Cert may effect what courses or employment options are available to you after you leave school, so it is important to take the time to choose carefully.

John Kelly, Timber Purchaser

What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?

I canít say that I have been influenced by one subject or the other. They have all come into their own when asked about different topics by clients. A wide general knowledge is useful. I still find this useful as I am not sure what I will do next.

What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?

I wouldn't have been what you would call a very studious student. When I was in school I was mainly playing rugby, and loved rugby, but didn't really like studying so much. But I did study Latin, maths, English, Irish, art, physics and history. Physics I was very interested in and it's the interest in physics right now that helps me with work, but it wasn't something I excelled at in school.

I had very good science teachers in school, and my interest in physics probably has pushed me in some way. With this industry you are learning every day; every day is a school day, you gotta learn stuff, you gotta read yourself a lot. I have to educate myself an awful lot on the technologies we're dealing with and what's going on in my sector, so it's self-education really more than anything.

French has always stood to me and I believe that business studies has given me a brief insight into the career I have chosen and how to run a business etc.
