What were the main 'career decision' milestones in your life so far?

In fourth year of my undergraduate studies (European Studies), one of the subjects we had was European Law. European Law instantly became my favourite subject and I was really excelling at it. Even though I chose to do a master's degree in Business and Management in Trinity after my undergrad, I never forgot about my fantastic experience studying law.

Ultimately, I was offered a job in a law firm in Dublin which I took gladly. It was my very first employment! I think studying a broad range of subjects in a course like European Law enabled me to pursue a career otherwise I would not have had the chance of pursuing.

Who are the people who most influenced your career direction?

My boyfriend of two years massively encouraged me to change the direction of my career. I was still working in the first law practice for almost a year and a half when Niall helped me to realise that I had already learned everything I could in that practice and that I should find a more challenging job.

Thus, I began to look for another opportunity and within days my inbox was full of potential employers. I decided to work for Murray Flynn Maguire because they were looking for somebody who would be able to communicate with the Irish and Polish clients on a daily basis in their own languages. On occasion, I also liaise with our Spanish clients.

How did you go about getting your current job?

Murray Flynn Maguire advertised themselves on Facebook and my aunt, knowing the experience I had and what I was looking for, tagged me in the post. I went for the first interview where I had to present my translating and interpreting abilities, then after the second interview with of one the Partners of the firm, they offered me the job!

Describe a typical day?

The environment at Murray Flynn Maguire is great. It feels more like a family to be frank, we always help each other and share difficult tasks. The pace we work at is extremely fast. The Partner I am a legal secretary to has over 400 cases and we need to make sure that we are on top of things every day.

What are the main tasks and responsibilities?

The major part of my job is daily transcription of audio files. I also correspond with clients, barristers, other law firms, insurance companies, courts, engineers, doctors and hospitals, etc. every day to make sure that our clients cases run smoothly and that everything is in order.

My co-workers, work atmosphere, my tasks: transcription, translation and communication with various parties.

It would have to be how within three months I grasped the works of the company I work for and how up to speed I am with my daily tasks.

I would like to work for a big corporation that is involved in aircraft leasing as an in-house lawyer.

Does your job allow you to have a lifestyle you are happy with?

What I like most about my job is that we organise many fantastic events during the year. We celebrate each other's birthdays, Christmas, Easter and the opening of the summer holiday season in style. So far we have had two baby showers and expecting the third one next week!

What advice would you give to someone considering this job?

Make sure to have studied law before applying for a legal secretarial position. It is a difficult industry to get into and education (if do not have experience) is crucial in getting a job in law.
