Social

The Social person's interests focus on some aspect of those people in their environment. In all cases the social person enjoys the personal contact of other people in preference to the impersonal dealings with things, data and ideas found in other groups.

Many will seek out positions where there is direct contact with the public in some advisory role, whether a receptionist or a counsellor. Social people are motivated by an interest in different types of people, and like diversity in their work environments. Many are drawn towards careers in the caring professions and social welfare area, whilst others prefer teaching and other 'informing' roles.

This course gives you some understanding of the basic fabric of our planet through the study of chemistry, physics and earth sciences. Graduates gain the knowledge and skills to work as field science technicians in the area of wildlife biology. The course is delivered through a mix of theory, laboratory practice and field activities.
Each week brings you to a new study site, where you spend a full day of field science activity. In first year, you are given a foundation in biology, and this is built on in second year with modules in botany, zoology and microbiology. Ecology is also introduced in second year of the course. There are also modules in environmental science, scientific communication and geographical information systems (GIS).

This programme is designed to prepare students for work in the areas of ecological consultancy, environmental education and biodiversity conservation. It includes a basic grounding in the chemical and life sciences, with an emphasis on all aspects of the natural environment. The outdoor education modules which feature so prominently in the first two years of this course give you the skills to work and navigate safely in outdoor environments. As with all of our courses, there is a period of work placement in a relevant, professional setting.

It’s important to note that much of this course is delivered in remote and challenging outdoor environments. You need to be reasonably fit, and prepared for bad weather and rough terrain.
