Ideally, try and get a job in the industry for a summer, or get a bit of experience before you go into it. You have to be happy with working outside, and doing physical work. If you are not prepared to work hard or are looking for a soft job, don't go into Landscaping. Design is very sexy at the moment, everyone wants to be a designer, a Landscape Designer. It's different on the ground, you have to be out there on sites in all weather and you have to make sure projects are managed well and you're able to muck in with everyone else. Biology is most important for anyone going into Horticulture or Landscaping as it covers propagation and helps with the identification of plant names, species and families through the universal use of Latin. Chemistry is also helpful as the use of various chemicals is a constant in horticulture. The chemical content and dangers of fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides in use in Amenity Horticulture needs to be understood anyone going into this business. Geography would be a relevant subject as well. Also, the simple things like having a full, clean driving licence, which can make you a lot more employable if you are trying for a job with a Landscape Conractor. This indicates that you are more mobile and can also drive a company van if needed. Be sure you're happy with the outdoor life. Having taken a Horticulture course will give you an advantage. However, it's possible to take a job first and study later, e.g. in IT Blanchardstown it is possible to study at night. I think you cannot beat doing the Diploma Course in the National Botanic Gardens because it is a good practical course which also covers all the theory and is invaluable for gaining plant knowledge.

This four year programme prepares students for their role as a registered nurse working with adults with a range of illnesses both in hospital as well as community based health care settings. 

All modules integrate theory and practice and include practice placements mainly throughout the North East region. These placements are offered in partnership with the HSE (North East), St. John of God North East Services, and other agencies which may be used for clinical placements.

Our programme consists of theory and practice placements, alternating throughout the semesters. The programme ends with a 36 week internship placement.


 

The subjects that you will study over the course of the four years can be grouped into five main themes to include:

  • Health Science
  • Exercise Science
  • Communicating the Health Message
  • Health Research

Supervised work placement is an essential component of this programme. The third year involves full-time placement in a general setting; Health Promotion Units within the HSE, Local Sports Partnerships, Health and Human Performance Laboratories, Sporting Organisations.


 

As a student on this programme you will develop the professional knowledge, skills and attitude needed to meet the specific needs of all groups of people with intellectual disability. Nurses who work with persons with intellectual disability have a diversity of roles, from intensive physical nursing of profoundly disabled individuals, to supportive guidance in the management and habilitation of children, adolescents and adults

Students are trained in St. Marys, Drumcar, Dunleer, Co. Louth.

As a student on this programme you will develop the professional knowledge, skills and understanding needed to fulfil the role of a midwife. 

This course will equip students with the knowledge to: 

  • Provide competent, safe midwifery care to women, their babies and, where possible, their wider family circle.
  • Demonstrate respect for the individuality of each woman and support shared decision-making throughout the woman’s childbirth experience.
  • Promote and support lifestyle choices that enhance the health and well- being of women, their families and the wider community.
  • Recognize the scope of midwifery practice, initiate appropriate referrals to other healthcare providers and provide emergency care when required.

The programme contains the essential elements that facilitate the development of professional knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to meet the nursing needs of individuals experiencing a range of feelings, problems and conflicts. 

The primary objective of psychiatric nursing is to facilitate the maximum development of the mental health of the individual who has psychiatric problems and to promote mental health in the wider community.
