I found having education in a number of different areas of engineering to be beneficial to the work I am doing.

There is a whole world of possibilities out there for engineers, and it is difficult to know what subjects are necessary for the industry you will end up in. I was always interested in robotics and environmental issues, but it was not until my Masters that I really knew what I wanted to do.

General entry courses are quite useful, as you get a taste for a few different areas before you have to specialise, a lot of companies offer on the job training, and there is also the possibility of further study.

An engineering qualification teaches you so much more than just the technical subjects, but a way of looking at the world and solving problems in a logical and systematic way.

Engineers are sought after for these skills as much as the technical ones, and it opens up incredible opportunities. Engineering is not an easy route through college, but it is incredibly rewarding.

Realist?
Realist
Realists are usually interested in 'things' - such as buildings, mechanics, equipment, tools, electronics etc. Their primary focus is dealing with these - as in building, fixing, operating or designing them. Involvement in these areas leads to high manual skills, or a fine aptitude for practical design - as found in the various forms of engineering.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.

This programme provides firm foundations and grounding in the fundamental skills of construction management allowing you to contribute as part of the management team for construction projects.


 

This course covers modules such as Construction Technology and Building Services which help students understand how buildings are put together and subsequently operate.

Specialisations consist of Quantity Surveying Practice & Procedures. Land Surveying, Computer Aided Design, Measurement and Estimating, and Procurement Studies. General modules cover broad but necessary disciplines such as Mathematics (Leaving Cert standard, for year 1 only) Practical Accountancy and Site Management.

There is also a six month work placement in year 3. 


 

As a student of Architectural Technology you will be encouraged to appreciate the concepts of architectural design and apply technical design principles in the development of a building to meet the project brief, the regulatory requirements for the building and the performance requirements for environmental and energy efficiency. 

This programme is delivered through studio project work, which increases in technical complexity as the course progresses. 


 

This higher certificate course aims to develop your technical and practical knowledge of the core modules applicable to civil engineering. Group and individual projects play a large part in coursework and are designed to reflect ‘real life’ projects in the industry. The course covers a range of modules including Structural Design, Land Surveying, Construction Technology, CAD and Communication Skills.


 

This programme provides firm foundations and grounding in the fundamental skills of construction management allowing you to contribute as part of the management team for construction projects. There is a six month work placement in year 3.

This programme covers all of the areas of expertise needed including; cost planning and controlling of construction projects, estimating, procurement, tendering and contracts administrative processes. 

In year 3 a four month work placement provides an opportunity for practical learning for each student.

The course covers a range of modules including Structural Design, Land Surveying, Hydraulics, Soil Mechanics, Construction Technology, Management Practices & Procedures and Communication Skills.


 

This course includes modules in Building Technology, Cost Control and Management, Site Management, Autocad & Site Surveying, Practical projects, and Site Visits. There is also a six month work placement in year three. 


 

Quantity surveying involves managing the deadlines, costs, and supplies needed during a construction project.

This course covers topics such as modern construction technology, building services, and construction procedures. Students may specialise in land surveying, measurement and estimating, procurement studies, cost studies, contracts and legal studies, and contract accounts administration.


 

This course covers surveying, construction law and regulations, the various technologies and building materials used in construction, and CAD (computer aided drawing).
