To become a General Dentist, it is necessary to complete a full-time five-year Degree programme. Most dentists work in private practice, but many will work through the HSE where they provide community dental services. 

There are many specialities dentists can pursue, they could help patients with the positioning of their teeth as an Orthodontist or work with preventing gum disease as a Periodontist. Cosmetic dentistry can work wonders for improving the self esteem of patients and repairing damage caused by injury. For major work on patient’s teeth an Oral Surgeon will be referred to. Post graduate qualifications are required for specialist dentistry practices such orthodontics.
