Pre-Primary Education

In Ireland, children must start school by six, but many enter primary education at ages four or five. There are a variety of voluntary educational options for children before they enter primary school. Options for parents include crèches, nurseries, pre-schools, naíonraí and playgroups.

Each defers slightly in format, but the emphasis is providing childcare and early childhood education to young children, with the aim of assisting their development and preparing them for primary school. There is increasing need for qualified childcare, this is partially down to the early childhood care and education scheme, which entitles each child to a year of pre-school education.

Related to this is more strict inspection of pre-school providers. These changes are raising standards in the industry. Consequently, it is now much more common to have a recognised qualification in Early Childhood Care and Education.
