What are your interests?

Realists are usually interested in 'things' - such as buildings, mechanics, equipment, tools, electronics etc. Their primary focus is dealing with these - as in building, fixing, operating or designing them. Involvement in these areas leads to high manual skills, or a fine aptitude for practical design - as found in the various forms of engineering.

Realists like to find practical solutions to problems using tools, technology and skilled work. Realists usually prefer to be active in their work environment, often do most of their work alone, and enjoy taking decisive action with a minimum amount of discussion and paperwork.

Psychology and Counseling

Psychologists study human behaviour and how we think, developing an understanding of human thought, emotion and behaviour. They then apply this knowledge to help people with their mental health.

As a psychologist you will help people understand and reflect on their own emotions, thoughts and actions, helping them towards a more positive outlook on life. Psychologists work in many settings, including clinical, counselling, educational, organisational and academic.

When working as counsellor’s, psychologists help people to deal with tough times in their life, like when they are experiencing distress or loss of direction in their lives. Another term you often here is psychotherapist. These are generally psychologists or psychiatrists who have had training in psychotherapy.

There are many different approaches to psychotherapy, but the focus is helping people to modify their behaviours, thoughts or emotions to improve their well-being and mental health.

Counsellors usually work with clients on a one-to-one basis, meeting them in private and treating their problems in confidence, but group-based approaches where people work through their issues collectively are also common. The choice of which would be most beneficial depends on the needs of the patients.
