Sources of Help
There are a range of information sources and supports are available to you when you are looking for a job or to up-skill in Ireland.
Organisations and services such as INTREO, the Local Employment Services (LES), INOU, Jobcare and Adult Education Guidance Services (AEGS) within local ETBs among others, provide a wide range of useful information and services including:
- Information on entitlements
- How to develop key skills required for the current labour market
- Expert assistance and advice on employment, training and upskilling opportunities and
- Practical supports such as CV and interview preparation
Just be mindful that each organisation provides it's own key supports.

Intreo is a service from the Department of Social Protection that provides a single point of contact for all employment and income supports.
Intreo offers practical, tailored employment services and supports for jobseekers and employers alike. These "one-stop-shops" for jobseekers are available in locations around the country.

Local Employment Services
The Local Employment Services (LES) were set up to help long-term unemployed people find work. The LES provide mediators who support individuals with their job search and liaise with local employers. Note: Many employment services are now provided through the new Intreo offices.
The services provided by the LES are tailored to the needs of each individual client and the local environment within which they operate. Services provided include guidance, training, education and employment supports and are made available through a network of Contact Points.
Key Services include:
- Labour Market information: Provision of information and advise on areas that relate to the client labour market situation, such as welfare-to-work issues, education, employment and training opportunities, including referral to related services.
- Mediation and Guidance: Registration and orientation; provision of intensive personalised guidance leading to development of a career path plan; career counselling; referral to other LESNs or third party agencies; assistance with securing active labour market programmes and employment; post-placement supports.
- Group Guidance: Provision of tailored options to meet the needs of a specific client group.
- Client-Employer Liaison: Contact with employers, identification of vacancies suited to clients and potential training needs; advocating on behalf of clients; information and referral to job vacancies.
- Post-Employment Programme Assistance: Provision of the full range of LESN supports to persons experiencing difficulty in accessing employment from labour market programmes.
- Post-Training/Education Programme Assistance: Provision of the full range of LESN supports to persons experiencing difficulty in accessing employment from employment related training or education.
The LES operates through a network of Offices and outreach centres known as 'Contact Points'. These are located in 24 designated disadvantaged areas. For more information: click here
Note: If a jobseeker refuses or fails to participate in suitable education, training or development opportunities, without just cause or good reason and/or drop out of the process the Department may recall them for an interview and their social welfare payment may be affected.
Job Clubs provide training to assist participants who are ready for work, to develop skills which they can use to find a job.
Anyone who is ready to work and is between 16 and 64 years of age can join a Job Club. Participants do not have to be on a social welfare payment but if they are, it will not be affected by becoming a member of a Job Club.
Training areas offered by Job Clubs range from Health and Safety, to Interview Techniques and generally last up to 4 weeks (see Course Content and Duration).
Job Club participants retain their social welfare allowances during the training modules and receive €20 per week to help in dealing with additional costs.
The INOU website contains a useful overview of what you need to know when you become unemployed.
The INOU works at local and national levels on issues affecting unemployed people. They support local groups through services such as training, information and analysis of government policies.
In particular, the downloadable leaflets Know Your Welfare Rights and Looking for Work and their comprehensive infomation handbook Working for Work are valuable resources for jobseekers.

The nationwide EmployAbility Service provides an employment support service for people with a health condition, injury, illness or disability and a recruitment advice service for the business community.
Your local EmployAbility service will:
- provide you with employment assistance and access to a pool of potential employees with varying levels of skills, abilities and training;
- provide ongoing support for both the employer and employee throughout employment;
- provide a professional job matching service to help ensure successful recruitment;
- provide advice and information on additional employment supports.
Jobcare offers a range of services, courses and resources to help people develop their skills and improve their employment opportunities.
The Resource Room is open to drop in clients Monday to Thursday from 10.00am to 12 noon. Access at other times is by appointment only. Jobclub members (clients who have completed a course in Jobcare) have privileged access to the Resource Room facilities from 10.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday.
The Jobseeker Course runs Monday to Thursday mornings from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Formal classes last for two hours with a short coffee break. At the end of each class you are given job-related tasks to complete in the Resource Room where Jobcare’s trained staff will help you to put what you have learned into practice.
Jobnet runs 9.30–1.30 Friday mornings for seven weeks. The programme focuses on personal branding, networking, goal setting and job seeking in a digital age. In addition to the large group setting, participants work in focus groups of six, each facilitated by a senior business manager, HR professional or career coach. The facilitators help to energise and support the group. Participants are encouraged to view each Jobnet session as a day at work and to plan appropriately. Key messages in the programme are confidence-building, reinvention, up-skilling, network building, targeted job search, seeking out local opportunities.
Jobcare offers two different FETAC accredited Computer Skills courses.
The primary focus of Time for Families - Building Stronger Families is encouraging loving, committed relationships within families. This focus is based in our Christian faith which motivates our compassion and commitment to social action. We want to reach people coming from a chaotic family background – those that have real needs and who have often missed out. Our highly successful relationship course, “Building Stronger Families”, which Jobcare is the sole provider of in Ireland, has run effectively with community groups and with prisoners and their partners on the outside.
Career Coaching, Jobcare has a number of career coaches who kindly offer their time on a voluntary basis to help clients and staff who are seeking direction in their career paths. The service is available to participants in our programmes for jobseekers and to Jobcare staff.
External Training, Jobcare offers a range of workshops and training courses that can be delivered to youth and community groups, businesses and institutions. Learning takes place in groups where there is a close ratio of tutor to participant. Jobcare is happy to discuss how course material could be tailored to suit the particular needs of a group.

Adult Education Guidance Services
Many people are unsure of where they should start when thinking about returning to education for personal development, to upskill or to get a job. There are services and supports available to help you with making these decisions:
The Adult Education Guidance Service in Ireland is available to adults who are thinking about returning to education and or accessing employment opportunities.
Guidance Counsellors and Co-ordinators also provide guidance to those participating or thinking about adult education programmes.
