Placement Details

The aim of our Transition Year program is to teach people how a zoo facility works, and give them a taster as to what it might be like to work in that area as a career. Animals need to be cleaned and given fresh water daily but there are also come other tasks that need to be done as well such as biometrics and fecal samples to make sure that the animals are in good health.

These tasks are designed to not only help the animals, feeding, food collection, clean waters etc., but also to help the student learn more about the animals themselves. Cleaning the windows is an important first task for all students who enter the zoo. Cleaning the outside windows of the exhibits gives the student knowledge of where in the zoo the animal is. They are also instructed to observe the animal in the exhibit as well as read the information card on that given animal. It gives students the opportunity to understand a bit more of the animal’s behaviour before they come in contact with them.

Students will get a wide range of experience here in the zoo. Jobs range from cleaning exhibits and windows to administrative work. Most aspects of running/working in a zoo are visited over the work placement so that a student leaves with a full understanding of a work place.
