Ireland has seen its first group of International Financial Services (IFS) Apprentices graduate, this is one of the new apprenticeship programmes which were launched in 2017.

The IFS Associate and IFS Specialist apprenticeships are two-year programmes being run by Ibec's Financial Services Ireland in conjunction with the National College of Ireland (NCI), where apprentices combine practical on-the-job experience and traditional classroom learning.

The first intake of apprentices in 2017 gained a work contract with major names in the financial services sector such as Fidelity, Citi Bank and Allianz, and experienced a 100% pass rate in all exams and assessments at the end of year one, with a 90% retention rate between year one and two. 100% of apprentices also stated that they would wish to remain in the IFS sector upon completion of their respective programme.

IFS Associate

The IFS Associate apprenticeship will award successful apprentices with a Level 6 Higher Certificate in International Financial Services as well gaining invaluable practical experience. Over the two-year academic side of this programme, apprentices will cover important modules such as financial accounting, economics and statistics while also being allowed to practice these skills in a working environment.

Entry requirements for this particular apprenticeship programme consist of 5 Leaving Certificate Subjects including Maths and English. Applicants with an equivalent QQI Level 5 or 6 qualification will also be considered. Along with this, all applicants must be 18 years of age to be considered and all candidates must work contract with a participating company before they can commence the programme.

You can find out more about the IFS Associate programme here.

IFS Specialist

Apprenticeship candidates for the IFS Specialist programme will receive a Level 8 Higher Diploma in Financial Services Analytics upon successful completion. Throughout the course of their apprenticeship they will focus heavily on data and financial analysis, and this is reflected by modules such as financial markets, data mining and business data analysis.

The entry requirements for this apprenticeship differ significantly to the IFS Associate. The IFS Specialist apprenticeship requires a minimum 2.2 Level 8 honours degree in any discipline, though applicants with a background in a financial, technical or mathematical field may have an advantage in entering the programme. Again, applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must have an apprenticeship contract offered to them by an employer.
